The new G.Fast modem
With the further development of highly efficient vectoring techniques and an expansion of the frequency spectrum, higher bandwidths are made possible using G.Fast technology. In order to use these, however, high-quality hardware is required that has the appropriate hardware chipsets.
The first generation of the Vigor166 supports G.Fast with 106Mhz and will provide 212Mhz from Q4/2020, as part of the second generation.
The Vigor166 will not replace the Vigor165, but will be launched in addition to it and both products will remain available in parallel. This is because there are no chipsets that support ADSL and G.Fast at the same time, as both have a similar frequency spectrum and interference could occur.
This means that the Vigor165 will continue to be available for ADSL/VDSL/Supervectoring connections. The Vigor166 will then serve VDSL/Supervectoring/G.Fast connections.
Please also note that due to the removal of ADSL support on the Vigor166, there are no longer separate Annex-A and Annex-B variants, as this only affected ADSL spectrums.
When delivered, the Vigor166 is a pure modem. If desired, the administrator can reconfigure the device as a router within the web interface. The Vigor166 then has an integrated SPI firewall, port forwarding, DHCP server and other features.
